Optical Coherence Tomography Scan (OCT)
We now have the availability to perform OCT examinations! An OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) scan allows us to see what is happening beneath the surface of your eye. The scan produces a 3D image showing the different layers in your eye. Our opticians are able to study and measure the thickness of these layers. This helps us to determine the health of your eyes in greater detail.
It is possible for an OCT scan to detect sight-threatening conditions much earlier than a routine eye examination could. Conditions such as glaucoma can be detected up to four years earlier.
Who should have one?
We recommend an OCT scan with every eye examination. It is useful for us to have this image on your file to refer back to. It allows us to monitor any changes over time when you come for future appointments. This could help us identify early signs of any eye conditions (such as glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy) before you have any symptoms.
If we are able to identify these conditions early on we may be able to prevent sight loss in the future. The scan itself only takes a matter of minutes and our optician will be able to explain everything to you.
How does it work?
The scan itself uses light to take over 1,000 images of the back of your eye. The photos look right back to the optic nerve. This is all done within seconds and you will not need to have drops in beforehand.
A layered image is created which shows the structures and layers within your eye. Our optician will be able to interpret the image for you. We save this image on your file so we can compare it when you come for future appointments.
